COVID-19 AND IMPORTANT UPDATES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN AUSTRALIA

The Universities and the Government of Australia has reached out to the international students in many ways and this information is being made available to the student through its communication links with University.

Some of the assistance and facilities extended to current International students by the respective UNIVERSITIES are as follows,

  • Financial support for eligible students (application has to be submitted)
  • Hardship allowance –depending on the situation
  • Laptop loans ( long term)- to continue studies online
  • Emergency Fund reliefs
  • Grocery grant – to purchase food items

Other assistance & considerations extended by the universities

  • Due date for fees has been extended. Please check with university
  • Technical support for online studies available
  • Medical support centers and hotlines provided
  • Counselor service for students who are stressed & in need of mental support

1. How long is the travel ban going to be?



2. What are the options to commence studies in July ‘2020


  • Australia – owing to currently imposed travel ban Most of the universities have implemented online teaching platforms to minimize disruption to one’s education progress. Therefore you can apply for an offer for July and gaet started by enrolling online in to 2 units and receive credits once arriving in Australia. Some of the Institutions are also in the process of mapping out additional intakes in-between. Please contact IEC for details

  • Canada – applications for May/June intakes are now closed or you are short of time for the process. However you can apply for the Sep ’20 intake which is the most popular intake for Canada.

3. How effective and accepted is the online teaching & qualification?


  • Australia - most universities in Australia have always been delivering online courses at ‘CLOUD CAMPUS’ therefore these deliveries methods and technology used are updated and are accepted for employment.
  • New Zealand – – National Ministry of Education recognises online universities vouching they respect educational standards. Distance Learning Centre has been recognised as a centre to deliver Open Awards Validated courses and qualifications. Open Awards qualifications are approved by the regulator, Ofqual, have been developed and endorsed by the relevant Sector Skills Council, and are designed to meet the needs of learners and employers
  • Canada – The programs are accredited by the State and professional program accrediting and regulatory bodies to ensure that a high standard in quality of teachingand learning is maintained. The Canadian schools are well equipped to facilitate and provide lectures and courses online, which are accepted by employers when hiring.

4. Based on online studies how will the post study work eligibility be?


  • Australia (PSWV) - The government is working on this and will soon notify if and how online studies will be considered for PSWV. Since the minimum requirement to be eligible for PSWV is 2 FULL YEARS ON SHORE STUDIES (UG Bach/PG Master) if your intended study course is going to be over two years (after due credits for prior learning) you may get started online for July. If not you are advised to secure an offer but wait until government confirms its decision for PSWV.
  • New Zealand (PSWV) - The Government is yet to issue a communique with regards to PSWV and will update once details are available.
  • Canada (PGWP) - As per the latest update, if 50% of the study course is completed on-shore will make you eligible for PGWP. Please browse link for details Important Announcement: International Students Remain Eligible for PGWP with Online-Only Format

5. When is the best time to get started with the application process?


  • Australia – You can apply right away and secure an offer for JULY. You have the option of starting online with just 2 units or You will have the option of postponing your commencement based on the developments and changes that will continue to happen.
  • New Zealand -You can apply right away and secure an offer for JULY/OCT depending on the availability. You will have the option of postponingyour commencement based on the developments and changes that will continue to happen. Since New Zealand visa process is 3 months, you are not too early to get started now for OCT 2020.
  • Canada - If you are willing to get started online for MAY intake you may apply now. SEP ’20 intake applications are also been accepted right now.

6. Since IELTS exams are currently unavailable, what are the options available in place of IELTS?


  • Australia - most institutions have introduced their own testing systems which are mostly Skype tests or online exams which needs prior registration.
  • New Zealand -in the absence of IELTS/TOEFL the NZ immigration and the education institutions are accepting the following online exam.


  • Canada - Alternatives to IELTS - Online ELP Tests: Duolingo English Test
